Get the Most Out of Your Office Space

An office is just an office, right?

Well, no. An office is much more than that.

It’s the place where you, your employees and/or colleagues spend roughly 13-years worth of working hours throughout your lives. Yeah, that’s a long time. Wouldn’t it be great to spend it both productively and comfortably?

Most people spend more of their waking lives at work than they do at home, so it makes sense to get the most out of your life at the office. Simple changes to workplace design can make a huge difference to people’s mood, motivation levels and, ultimately, productivity.

Business owners and facilities managers everywhere are rethinking their office design because the world is beginning to realise that an office space is not just a space. It’s a second home.

Form meets function

Space planning should always begin with practicality in mind. Office furniture and office interiors need to fit naturally and comfortably together. Aesthetics are important too. But functional design should always be the first thing you consider.

Here are some of the most important things to think about when you’re mapping out your office space:

  • No square pegs in round holes – The designer boardroom table you’re thinking of buying may be lovely to look at, but if you’re cramming a sizeable, avant-garde triangular table into a small rectangular room, it’s just going to be cumbersome and awkward. The same applies to general office space; function should be followed by aesthetics rather than vice versa. It’s always a good idea to start by measuring your office and drawing a flat floor plan. That way, you can consider your layout and basic shapes in their simplest form and add the “frills” later.
  • Think timeless, not “space-age” – Equipping an office is an investment and you want your new design to be ‘future-proofed’. If you’re considering modern office design, you can find fixtures and furniture that look good and will age well too. Linoleum floors were hugely popular in the 70s, but you don’t see them so much now. You can be fashionable without becoming outdated too soon. Longevity is a practical and cost-effective solution.
  • Maximise storage space at every level – When you’re doing that initial flat office plan, it’s not just tables and chairs you need to think about. Cupboards, cabinets, drawers and more, are equally important. Clutter is a productivity killer, so provide solutions that take it out of the equation. Beyond the bigger storage solutions, dig a bit deeper – at desk level. Desk space can be maximised too. Pen holders, desktop filing solutions, monitor stands and shelves are just some of the problem solvers here. This element of office design is often neglected but is more valuable than you might think.
